ACSR/AW – Aluminum Conductor Aluminum Clad Steel Reinforced

BARE CONDUCTOR

ACSR/AW Conductor GB/T 1179

ACSR/AW Conductor to GB/T 1179 combines hard aluminium wires with a reinforcing core of aluminium-clad steel wires instead of galvanized steel. Two type codes are listed: JL/LB14, with 14% IACS clad wire, and JL/LB20A, with 20.3% IACS type A clad wire, both to GB/T 17937. The TDS gives 63 code numbers from 25/4 to 1405/115 for JL/LB14 and 82 from 15/3 to 1435/60 for JL/LB20A.

GB/T 1179 names this conductor an aluminium conductor, aluminium-clad steel reinforced. The code number gives the nominal areas of the aluminium and of the clad steel core, for example 630/55, and the stranding the number of wires in each, for example 48/7. Because the aluminium cladding conducts, the core contributes to the conductance of the conductor.

Conductor Construction

  • Aluminium wires: L-type hard aluminium to GB/T 17048, resistivity 28.264 nΩ·m at 20 °C (GB/T 1179 Clause 1.1)
  • Aluminium-clad steel wires: LB14 (123.15 nΩ·m, 14% IACS) or LB20A (84.80 nΩ·m, 20.3% IACS) to GB/T 17937 (GB/T 1179 Clause 1.1)
  • Stranding: All wires are stranded concentrically in layers of opposite direction with a right-hand outer layer unless ordered otherwise; when the strand is cut, the wire ends of strands of up to 19 wires stay in place or are easily put back by hand (GB/T 1179 Clauses 5.4.1, 5.4.2 and 5.4.5)
  • Lay ratio: Clad steel core 16 to 26 for a 6-wire layer and 14 to 22 for a 12-wire layer; aluminium outer layer 10 to 14 and inner layers 10 to 16 (GB/T 1179 Clause 5.4.4)
  • Core joints: No joint of any kind is allowed in the aluminium-clad steel wires during stranding (GB/T 1179 Clause 5.5.1)
  • Wire joints: None is made just to reach the conductor length; after an accidental break a joint dressed to the original wire diameter is allowed, up to 2, 3, 4 or 5 per production length for 1, 2, 3 or 4 and more layers, at least 15 m apart, with a tensile strength of at least 130 MPa (GB/T 1179 Clauses 5.5.3 to 5.5.5)
  • Rated strength: The strength of the aluminium wires plus the stress of the clad steel at 1% elongation on a 250 mm gauge length, multiplied by 95% for four aluminium layers (GB/T 1179 Clause 5.7.2)
  • Resistance: Calculated with the conductivity of the aluminium-clad steel core included (GB/T 1179 Clause 5.8)

The TDS has one table for each core type, following Tables A.10 and A.11 of the standard, whose d.c. resistances are calculated values. For each code number it gives steel ratio, areas, wires, diameters, linear mass, rated strength and resistance.

Typical Applications

  • Bare overhead transmission lines
  • Primary and secondary overhead distribution lines
  • Lines needing strength close to that of ACSR with slightly higher ampacity and better corrosion resistance, given by the aluminium-clad core

ACSR/AW Conductor to GB/T 1179 has an L-type hard aluminium envelope on an aluminium-clad steel core. The table below summarises the construction and calculation values of the standard; the properties of every code number are listed in the TDS tab.

Wire and Conductor Sample Tests

  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.2.2 and 6.4.1, all wires are sampled before stranding and tested against their own wire standards: GB/T 17048 for the aluminium and GB/T 17937 for the aluminium-clad steel.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.3, samples for the sample tests are cut at random from the outer ends of 10% of the drums, and the surface of every drum is examined before packing.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.6.1, the aluminium area worked out from measured wire diameters stays within ±2% of the calculated value and within ±1.5% of the mean of four readings taken at least 20 cm apart; the core area is the sum of its wire areas.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.6.2, the overall diameter is read to 0.01 mm between the closing die and the capstan and kept within ±1% of nominal for diameters of 10 mm or more, or ±0.1 mm below 10 mm.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.6.3, the linear mass, measured to ±0.1%, is within ±2% of the value listed in the TDS.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.6.4, wires taken from the finished conductor are straightened, pulled at 25 mm/min to 100 mm/min and reach at least 95% of their tensile strength before stranding.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.6.6 and 6.6.7, the surface shows no visible defects, and the lay ratio and direction of lay of every layer are checked against Clause 5.4.

Type Tests

  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.4.3 and 6.5.2, a sample at least 400 times the conductor diameter and not shorter than 10 m carries at least 95% of the rated strength with no wire breaking; a sample failing within 1 cm of a fitting may be retested, up to three tests in all.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 5.5.5 and 6.5.3, the welding method is shown by recent or new test results to give hard aluminium wire joints a tensile strength of at least 130 MPa.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.5.5, the d.c. resistance at 20 °C is measured by the method of GB/T 3048.4 and does not exceed the value listed in Appendix A; the aluminium-clad steel core is included in the calculation.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.5.1 and 6.5.4, where agreed, a stress-strain test follows Appendix D and a creep test follows GB/T 22077 at tensions such as 15%, 25% and 35% or 40% of the rated strength.

Inspection, Packing and Marking

  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.7.1 and 6.8, tests and inspection take place at the works before shipment unless agreed otherwise; a failed sample allows the lot it represents to be rejected, after which each drum of the lot may be tested once more and the conforming drums supplied.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 7.1 and 7.2, the conductor is delivered on drums to JB/T 8137 with at least 30 mm clearance below the flange rim, each drum marked with the producer’s name, type code, nominal area and number of wires, direction of rotation, length, gross and net mass and month of production.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 7.3, unavoidable short lengths are at least 50% of the agreed production length and make up no more than 5% of the quantity delivered.
