Scope of Application

PIESA 1062 specifies requirements for concentric single-phase aerial service cables intended for domestic service connections with a combined neutral-earth (CNE) conductor. These cables are primarily designed for aerial connections to a customer's installation in distribution systems serving mainly domestic customers with low to moderate consumption across Eastern and Southern Africa. They may also be installed underground where required.

Cable Construction

The cable features a concentric construction with a central insulated phase conductor surrounded by a combined neutral-earth (CNE) concentric layer of annealed copper wires. The phase core is positioned at the centre, and the concentric layer wires are evenly distributed around it.

Layer 1
Phase Conductor

7-wire circular stranded annealed copper (may be compacted), complying with SANS 1411-1. Available in 10 mm² and 16 mm².

Layer 2
Insulation

PVC, PE, or XLPE compound applied by extrusion over the phase conductor. Colour: red or brown as specified.

Layer 3
Concentric CNE Layer

Combined neutral-earth (CNE) conductor consisting of at least 12 annealed copper wires, evenly distributed around the insulated phase core.

Layer 4
Outer Sheath

Black UV-stabilised PVC or PE compound applied over the concentric layer. Embossed with standard number, voltage rating, conductor size, and manufacturer's identification.

Quality & Testing Requirements

All cables produced to PIESA 1062 must pass the following mandatory tests:

Voltage Withstand Test2,000 V a.c. r.m.s. applied between phase conductor and CNE neutral for 10 minutes. No breakdown permitted.

Insulation ResistanceMinimum 60 MΩ·km measured between phase conductor and neutral layer at 20 °C.
Bending Test180° bend around a mandrel of 8× the nominal overall diameter. No cracking or distortion of insulation or sheath.
Conductor DC ResistanceDC resistance of both phase and neutral conductors must not exceed the values specified in the standard when corrected to 20 °C.
