acs-Aluminum Clad Steel Conductor

BARE CONDUCTOR

ACS Conductor GB/T 1179

ACS Conductor to GB/T 1179 is a concentric lay strand made only of aluminium-clad steel wires, each a steel wire clad with aluminium. Five type codes cover five conductivity grades of GB/T 17937: JLB14, JLB20A, JLB27, JLB35 and JLB40, from 14% to 40% IACS. The TDS lists 33 code numbers from 30 to 800 for JLB14 and JLB20A, and 32 from 35 to 800 for the other three grades.

All grades share one construction for each code number, and the TDS gives linear mass, rated strength and resistance per grade. Read across the columns from JLB14 to JLB40, the linear mass, rated strength and resistance all fall as the conductivity grade rises. A type code such as JLB20A-150-19 adds the number of wires to the nominal area.

Conductor Construction

  • Aluminium-clad steel wires: Grades LB14, LB20A, LB27, LB35 and LB40 to GB/T 17937, with resistivities from 123.15 nΩ·m down to 43.10 nΩ·m (GB/T 1179 Clause 1.1)
  • Stranding: All wires are stranded concentrically in layers of opposite direction with a right-hand outer layer unless ordered otherwise; when the strand is cut, the wire ends of strands of up to 19 wires stay in place or are easily put back by hand (GB/T 1179 Clauses 5.4.1, 5.4.2 and 5.4.5)
  • Lay ratio: 10 to 16 for all layers of an aluminium-clad steel strand (GB/T 1179 Clause 5.4.4)
  • Joints: No joint of any kind is allowed in the aluminium-clad steel wires during stranding (GB/T 1179 Clause 5.5.1)
  • Rated strength: The sum of the minimum breaking loads of all wires, reduced to 95% of that sum for strands of 61 wires (GB/T 1179 Clause 5.7.1)
  • Resistance: Calculated from the resistivity of the clad wire grade given in GB/T 17937 (GB/T 1179 Clause 5.8)
  • Mass and resistance increments: The same stranding increments as an aluminium strand with the same number of wires (GB/T 1179 Clause 5.6.2)

Standard Strandings

Number of Wires Layers (excluding centre wire) JLB14 / JLB20A Code Numbers JLB27 / JLB35 / JLB40 Code Numbers Stranding Increment
7 1 30 to 95 (11) 35 to 95 (10) 1.31%
19 2 80 to 240 (8) 100 to 240 (7) 1.80%
37 3 300 to 670 (11) 300 to 670 (12) 2.04%
61 4 600 to 800 (3) 600 to 800 (3) 2.19%

Numbers in brackets are the sizes listed for each stranding. The two TDS tables follow Tables A.4 and A.5 of the standard, whose d.c. resistances are calculated values. They give calculated area, number and diameter of wires, overall diameter, and the linear mass, rated strength and resistance of each grade.

Typical Applications

  • Production of optical ground wire (OPGW)
  • Conventional stranded earth wires for overhead lines
  • Reinforcing cores for the phase conductors of overhead lines
  • Helical fittings for overhead lines
  • Uses where resistance to corrosion is an important factor

ACS Conductor to GB/T 1179 is stranded from aluminium-clad steel wires of one conductivity grade. The table below summarises the construction and calculation values of the standard; the properties of every code number are listed in the TDS tab.

Wire and Conductor Sample Tests

  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.2.2 and 6.4.1, all wires are sampled before stranding and tested against their own wire standards: GB/T 17937 for the aluminium-clad steel wires.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.3, samples for the sample tests are cut at random from the outer ends of 10% of the drums, and the surface of every drum is examined before packing.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.6.1.2 and 6.6.1.3, the conductor area is the sum of the wire areas, each worked out from the mean of three micrometer readings of the wire diameter, coating or cladding included, rounded to two decimal places.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.6.2, the overall diameter is read to 0.01 mm between the closing die and the capstan and kept within ±1% of nominal for diameters of 10 mm or more, or ±0.1 mm below 10 mm.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.6.3, the linear mass, measured to ±0.1%, is within ±2% of the value listed in the TDS.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.6.4, wires taken from the finished conductor are straightened, pulled at 25 mm/min to 100 mm/min and reach at least 95% of their tensile strength before stranding.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.6.5, where required, the resistivity of wires taken from the strand is measured on hand-straightened samples by the method of GB/T 3048.2 and meets GB/T 17937.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.6.6 and 6.6.7, the surface shows no visible defects, and the lay ratio and direction of lay of every layer are checked against Clause 5.4.

Type Tests

  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.4.3 and 6.5.2, a sample at least 400 times the conductor diameter and not shorter than 10 m carries at least 95% of the rated strength with no wire breaking; a sample failing within 1 cm of a fitting may be retested, up to three tests in all.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 6.5.5, the d.c. resistance at 20 °C is measured by the method of GB/T 3048.4 and does not exceed the value listed in Appendix A.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.5.1 and 6.5.4, where agreed, a stress-strain test follows Appendix D and a creep test follows GB/T 22077 at tensions such as 15%, 25% and 35% or 40% of the rated strength.

Inspection, Packing and Marking

  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 6.7.1 and 6.8, tests and inspection take place at the works before shipment unless agreed otherwise; a failed sample allows the lot it represents to be rejected, after which each drum of the lot may be tested once more and the conforming drums supplied.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clauses 7.1 and 7.2, the conductor is delivered on drums to JB/T 8137 with at least 30 mm clearance below the flange rim, each drum marked with the producer’s name, type code, nominal area and number of wires, direction of rotation, length, gross and net mass and month of production.
  • In accordance with GB/T 1179 Clause 7.3, unavoidable short lengths are at least 50% of the agreed production length and make up no more than 5% of the quantity delivered.
