NA2XRY YJLV72 cable aluminum conductor 3 core

LOW VOLTAGE CABLE

NA2XRY – YJLV72 (AL/XLPE/SWA/PVC) Multi Core

Multi-core NA2XRY Cable, also designated YJLV72 under the Chinese GB standard, is a round wire armoured, aluminium-conductor, XLPE insulated, PVC sheathed low-voltage power cable manufactured in accordance with IEC 60502-1 for power networks up to and including 0.6/1 kV. Under the German VDE 0276-603 designation, NA2XRY refers to a standard-type cable (N) with aluminium conductor (A), XLPE insulation (2X), round wire armour (R) and PVC outer sheath (Y), designed for three-phase power distribution circuits requiring high tensile strength, heavy mechanical protection and reduced cable weight.

Multi-core NA2XRY (YJLV72) Cable is designed as a round wire armoured low-voltage power cable for fixed installation in three-phase distribution circuits where high tensile strength, vertical-run support and heavy mechanical protection are required, and where reduced cable weight is preferred. It consists of multiple aluminium conductors, individually XLPE insulated and identified by colour, laid up together with non-hygroscopic fillers, covered by an inner PVC bedding, a concentric layer of non-magnetic steel armour wires and a PVC outer sheath. The cable is suitable for cable shafts, vertical risers, mine entries, river crossings, direct burial under traction load, and any installation where the armour must also bear longitudinal mechanical stress.

Cable Construction

  • Conductor: Plain aluminium or aluminium alloy, class 1 (solid) or class 2 (stranded), constructed according to IEC 60228.
  • Insulation: Extruded cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), suitable for a maximum conductor temperature of 90 °C in normal operation.
  • Core identification: By colour according to VDE 0293-308 (typical arrangement: brown / black / grey, plus green-yellow for the protective earth conductor in NA2XRY-J).
  • Laid-up cores: Insulated cores cabled together with non-hygroscopic fillers to form a substantially circular cross-section.
  • Inner covering (bedding): Extruded PVC applied over the laid-up cores, providing a bed for the armour.
  • Armour: A concentric layer of non-magnetic steel wires (austenitic stainless steel or equivalent non-magnetic alloy), closely applied with a minimum gap between adjacent wires, in nominal diameters of 0.8 / 1.25 / 1.6 / 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.15 mm selected per IEC 60502-1 Table 9.
  • Outer sheath: Extruded PVC applied over the armour, providing mechanical, moisture and chemical protection.

NA2XRY Cable Designations

Designation Description
NA2XRY-J Multi-core aluminium conductor, XLPE insulated, non-magnetic steel wire armoured, PVC sheathed, with green-yellow protective earth conductor
NA2XRY-O Multi-core aluminium conductor, XLPE insulated, non-magnetic steel wire armoured, PVC sheathed, without protective earth conductor
NA2XRY RE Multi-core aluminium conductor, round solid (class 1), XLPE insulated, non-magnetic steel wire armoured, PVC sheathed
NA2XRY RM Multi-core aluminium conductor, round stranded (class 2), XLPE insulated, non-magnetic steel wire armoured, PVC sheathed
N2XRY Multi-core copper conductor version, XLPE insulated, non-magnetic steel wire armoured, PVC sheathed
YJLV72 Equivalent designation under Chinese GB standard: aluminium conductor, XLPE insulated, non-magnetic steel wire armoured, PVC sheathed

For standard multi-core NA2XRY (YJLV72) cable, the key distinction is the use of a concentric layer of non-magnetic steel armour wires laid over the cabled cores, combined with aluminium phase conductors, providing significantly higher tensile strength than tape armour at substantially lower cable weight, rated at 0.6/1 kV (Um = 1.2 kV) in accordance with IEC 60502-1. The designation NA2XRY itself is defined under VDE 0276-603 in the German cable nomenclature system, and the equivalent designation under Chinese GB is YJLV72, where “L” identifies the aluminium conductor and “72” identifies non-magnetic round wire armour. Compared with copper-conductor N2XRY, NA2XRY offers significantly lower overall cable weight and reduced material cost, which is particularly valuable for armoured cables in long vertical runs and utility-scale installations.

In a multi-core armoured construction, the alternating currents of the three phases sum to zero and the magnetic fluxes through the armour are cancelled, so ordinary magnetic steel wire would in principle be acceptable. The use of non-magnetic steel wire across both single-core and multi-core variants ensures a single armour material across the product line, simplifying inventory and ensuring full compliance with IEC 60502-1 Clause 12.2 for any mixed AC application.

Typical Applications

  • Three-phase low-voltage power distribution networks up to 0.6/1 kV
  • Utility distribution feeders requiring mechanical protection and reduced cable weight
  • Vertical cable runs and shafts where the armour must bear the cable’s own weight
  • Cable risers in high-rise buildings, mine entries and offshore structures
  • Direct burial in soils subject to settlement, traction or longitudinal stress
  • Large-section feeders and long-distance distribution where weight and cost are critical factors

Internationally, multi-core NA2XRY is a 0.6/1 kV multi-core aluminium round-wire armoured XLPE/PVC power cable defined under IEC 60502-1, and is most commonly cross-referenced with the Chinese GB designation YJLV72 (AL/XLPE/SWA/PVC) where SWA denotes single-wire armour.

Multi-core NA2XRY (YJLV72) Cable is manufactured for low-voltage three-phase power distribution systems with rated voltage up to and including 0.6/1 kV, in accordance with IEC 60502-1, with cable designation NA2XRY defined under VDE 0276-603 and YJLV72 under the Chinese GB standard. The cable is intended for power distribution circuits requiring high tensile strength, heavy mechanical protection and reduced cable weight, such as vertical risers, shafts, direct burial under traction load, and crossings of rivers, roads or railways.

Electrical Tests

  • Conductor resistance test on each core
  • AC voltage test (3.5 kV, 5 min) between conductors and between each conductor and armour / earth
  • Insulation resistance test at ambient temperature
  • Insulation resistance test at maximum operating temperature (90 °C)
  • Spark test on the PVC inner covering (bedding)
  • 4-hour voltage test (type test)

Mechanical Tests

  • Tensile strength and elongation tests on XLPE insulation and PVC sheath before and after ageing
  • Low-temperature bending and impact tests on insulation and sheath
  • Measurement of round armour wire diameter against IEC 60502-1 Table 9
  • Verification of armour closure (minimum gap between adjacent wires)
  • Tensile test on armour wires

Physical and Material Tests

  • Hot set test for XLPE insulation
  • Pressure test at high temperature for PVC inner covering and outer sheath
  • Heat shock (crack resistance) test for PVC inner covering and outer sheath
  • Shrinkage test for XLPE insulation and PVC sheath
  • Corrosion-resistance check of armour wires
