ABC CABLE

ABC Cable (3+1+2 Core) NF C 33-209

ABC Cable (3+1+2 Core) to NF C 33-209 is a 0.6/1 kV aerial bundled cable made of three insulated aluminium phase conductors and two insulated aluminium public lighting conductors twisted around one insulated aluminium alloy neutral messenger. All conductors carry black cross-linked polyethylene insulation. The TDS lists 10 sizes from 3×25+1×54.6+2×16 to 3×150+1×95+2×16 mm².

NF C 33-209 applies to bundled insulated conductors for overhead power systems with a rated voltage of 0.6/1 kV. A bundle may include public lighting conductors and pilot conductors besides the phase and neutral conductors (NF C 33-209 Clause 1). The neutral messenger carries the mechanical load of the bundle. The public lighting conductors supply street lighting circuits from the same bundle.

Cable Construction

  • Phase conductors: Circular stranded and compacted aluminium wires of purity at least equal to aluminium 1350 of NF C 31-122; welds in the wires are allowed (NF C 33-209 Clause 3.1)
  • Public lighting conductors: Circular stranded aluminium of the same kind as the phase conductors, 16 and 25 mm² (NF C 33-209 Clauses 1 and 3.1)
  • Neutral messenger: Aluminium-magnesium-silicon alloy wires of 3.15 mm (54.6 mm²), 3.50 mm (70 mm²) or 2.50 mm (95 mm², provisional value) nominal diameter, with a coefficient of linear expansion of 23 × 10-6/K and a modulus of elasticity of 62 000 MPa; welds in the messenger wires are at least 50 m apart (NF C 33-209 Clauses 3.1 and 4.1.2)
  • Messenger stranding: The outer layer is laid left-hand (S) with a lay length of not more than 20 times the conductor diameter (NF C 33-209 Clause 4.1.3)

  • In accordance with NF C 33-209 Clause 6.7, samples of about 3 m in water withstand five positive and five negative 1.2/50 µs impulses of 20 kV peak between conductor and water.

Routine Tests and Marking

  • In accordance with NF C 33-209 Clauses 4.3.1 and 4.3.2 and Annex B, the overall diameter and the conductor continuity are checked as routine tests on every production length.
  • In accordance with NF C 33-209 Annex B, Clause B.2 and Table B1, each length passes a routine dielectric test after 1 h in water at 4 kV a.c. or 10 kV d.c. for 15 min; after any repair the whole conductor is tested again.
  • In accordance with NF C 33-209 Clause 5, marking characters are at least 5 mm high and 2 mm wide, and successive marks are placed head to tail along the conductor.
