BARE CONDUCTOR
AAC Conductor (All Aluminum Conductor) is a homogeneous hard-drawn aluminium 1350 concentric-lay stranded overhead conductor manufactured in accordance with ASTM B231/B231M for bare and weather-resistant covered overhead electrical applications. Each conductor is identified by an industry code word from Aluminum Association Publication 50 (Rose, Iris, Marigold, Bluebonnet, etc.) combined with conductor size in AWG or kcmil; under ASTM B231 classification, Class AA is intended for bare overhead lines and Class A for covered weather-resistant applications or bare service where greater flexibility is required. The conductor is designed for overhead transmission and distribution where high conductivity, light weight and low installed cost take priority over tensile reserve, and is the standard bare aluminium conductor specification in North America and other markets following ASTM standards.
AAC Conductor under ASTM B231/B231M is a bare or weather-resistant overhead stranded conductor composed exclusively of hard-drawn aluminium 1350 wires. With the highest conductivity-to-area ratio of any overhead aluminium conductor in the ASTM family, AAC is the standard choice for overhead distribution lines, substation bus work and service drops where corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity outweigh the tensile reserve advantage of a steel-cored ACSR.

Code words for AAC sizes are assigned under Aluminum Association Publication 50 and follow a flower-name convention that is part of the practical procurement vocabulary in North America even though the names themselves are not part of the ASTM formal definition. Within ASTM B231, conductors are classified by Class AA (bare overhead), Class A (covered weather-resistant or bare with greater flexibility), Class B (insulated), and Classes C and D (greater flexibility for insulated cable cores). For sizes available in both Class AA and Class A, the Class AA version typically uses the lower wire count (e.g. Sneezewort 250 kcmil 7-wire or Cosmos 477 kcmil 19-wire) for stiffer bare overhead service, while the Class A version uses a higher wire count (e.g. Valerian 250 kcmil 19-wire or Syringa 477 kcmil 37-wire) for greater flexibility.
Rated tensile strength of AAC under ASTM B231 is calculated as a rating factor multiplied by the sum of the minimum tensile strengths of the component wires. The rating factors decrease with stranding layer count: 96% for 7-wire (single-layer), 93% for 19-wire (two-layer), 91% for 37-wire (three-layer), 90% for 61-wire (four-layer), and 89% for 91-wire and 127-wire (five-layer and above) constructions. Mass and electrical resistance per unit length include stranding increments of 2% for sizes below 1000 mm², 3% for 1000–1500 mm², and 4% for 1500–2000 mm²; the maximum d.c. resistance of any stranded conductor shall not exceed 2% over the nominal value at 20°C.
AAC manufactured to ASTM B231/B231M is functionally equivalent to IEC 61089 type code A1 (with wire material per IEC 889), GB/T 1179 JL designation, BS EN 50182 AL1 series and AS 1531 — allowing the same conductor to be supplied against multiple international procurement standards. The ASTM code-word convention (Rose, Pansy, Marigold, etc.) is the practical procurement identifier in North America and is referenced in utility specifications even when an international standard is invoked.
AAC Conductor is manufactured in accordance with ASTM B231/B231M as a hard-drawn aluminium 1350 concentric-lay stranded conductor for bare and weather-resistant overhead use, with wire material per ASTM B230/B230M (H19 temper) or ASTM B609/B609M (other tempers). The conductor is identified by Aluminum Association Publication 50 code words combined with size in AWG or kcmil.
