NF C 33-209

Standard Overview

NFC 33-209:1996 – Insulated or Protected Cables for Power Systems – Bundle Assembled Cores for Overhead Systems (Rated Voltage 0.6/1 kV) is the French national standard for bundled insulated overhead cables, ensuring mechanical durability and electrical safety in 0.6/1 kV distribution networks. It aligns with HD 626 (European harmonized standard) and is widely used in France and former French-influenced regions.

Key Technical Requirements

  • Conductor Materials
    • Phase conductors: Aluminum (1350 grade, per NFC 31-122)
    • Messenger (support) conductor: Aluminum alloy (AlMgSi) for mechanical strength
    • Test/pilot wires: Bare copper (solid or stranded)
  • Insulation
    • XLPE (Cross-linked polyethene), black (other colors optional)
    • Easily strippable, with optional separator tape for phase conductors
  • Cable Construction
    • Bundled assembly of insulated conductors with a messenger wire
    • Right-hand lay stranding
    • Standard configurations: 2, 3, or 4 cores + messenger wire
  • Electrical Ratings
    • Rated voltage (U₀/U): 0.6/1 kV
    • Test voltage: 4 kV (50 Hz)
    • Operating temperature: -30°C to +90°C
    • Short-circuit withstand: 250°C for 5 sec

Applications

  • Low-voltage overhead power distribution (rural/urban networks)
  • Public lighting systems
  • Industrial power supply

Compliance &Related Standards

  • HD 626 S1 (European harmonized document, basis for NFC 33-209)
  • IEC 60502-1 (General power cable standard)
