ICEA S-76-474

Standard Overview

ICEA S-76-474 is an industry standard published by the Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA) for Neutral-Supported Power Cables. It specifies requirements for bundled overhead conductors with an integrated neutral messenger wire, primarily used in secondary electrical distribution systems up to 1,000 V.

 Key Technical Requirements

  • Conductor Configuration
    • Integrated Design: Combines insulated phase conductors (aluminum) spiralled around a bare/covered steel neutral messenger wire
    • Voltage Rating: Rated for 600 V or 1,000 V systems
  • Material Specifications
    • Phase Conductors: XLPE or PE insulation with thicknesses of 0.76–1.52 mm
    • Messenger Wire: Galvanized steel strand compliant with ASTM A475 tensile strength (≥1,380 MPa)
  • Environmental Resilience
    • UV-resistant insulation, operational from –40°C to +90°C
    • Waterblocking features for wet conditions

Application

These cables are deployed in overhead power distribution networks requiring compact installations:

  • Secondary Distribution Lines: Service drops to residential/commercial buildings.
  • Rural Electrification: Cost-effective solutions for low-density areas.
  • Storm-Prone Regions: Enhanced durability against wind/ice loads due to integrated support.
